Canada Salary Report 2026: Pay and Take-Home by Occupation and Province

Median wages for 18 in-demand Canadian occupations from Job Bank Canada, ranked, compared province by province and converted to estimated 2026 take-home pay.

Key findings

  • Family physicians top the list with a national median of $110.00 an hour ($228,800 a year) — 6.3× the $17.50 median for cashiers, the lowest-paid occupation in the set.
  • Ontario pays the most: its medians average 5.6% above the national median across 18 occupations, and it has the highest provincial median for 10 of them.
  • The middle of the list — a median annual wage of $86,320 — takes home about $64,915 in Alberta, $65,712 in British Columbia, $64,596 in Ontario or $60,574 in Quebec after 2026 tax.
  • On the same national median salary, take-home pay differs by $5,358 a year on average between Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec — from income tax and payroll deductions alone, before any difference in pay.

Method and sources

  • Wages: Job Bank Canada wage data (low, median and high hourly wages by NOC 2021 occupation and province), refreshed April 2026, used under the Open Government Licence – Canada. One occupation in our snapshot was excluded because its NOC code and label disagree.
  • Annual pay = hourly wage × 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks), rounded to the dollar — full-time, year-round, before tax.
  • Take-home pay uses the same 2026 engine as our salary after tax calculator: federal and provincial brackets and basic personal amounts, CPP/CPP2 (QPP/QPP2 in Quebec), EI and QPIP. No other credits or deductions.
  • Province comparison averages (provincial median ÷ national median − 1) over the occupations each province has data for.
