How to write a Canadian cover letter that gets read
- Keep it to one page, 200–350 words. Canadian recruiters scan, not read.
- Three paragraphs: why this company, why you, what happens next.
- Mirror 2–3 keywords from the JD in the first paragraph. No more.
- Skip 'To whom it may concern'. Use the recruiter's name or 'Hi [Team] team,'.
- End with a soft action: 'I'd welcome a quick call to walk through how I'd approach the first 30 days.'
What Canadian cover letters look like in 2026
Canadian recruiters spend 8–15 seconds on a cover letter. They look for three things: do you understand the role, can you write clearly, do you sound like someone they'd put in front of the team. That's it.
The structure that consistently lands: a one-line hook that names the company and the role, two short paragraphs of evidence, and a closing line that invites a conversation. No "I am writing to apply for the position of…". No five paragraphs of corporate-speak.
The 3-paragraph structure that works
- Hook (2–3 sentences) — Name the role + company. Name one specific thing about them you respect. Why you, in one line.
- Evidence (4–6 sentences) — Two short stories that show you've done the job before. Numbers beat adjectives. Mirror 2–3 keywords from the JD.
- Close (2 sentences) — A soft CTA + your availability. "Happy to walk through how I'd approach the first 30 days — I'm in Toronto, available weekday afternoons."
How to use this generator
- Paste the JD. The generator pulls the company name, role, and 5–7 keywords.
- Paste your resume or the 2–3 bullets you'd want to highlight.
- Pick the tone: formal (banks, government), friendly (tech, startups), or balanced.
- Edit. Always edit. Replace one generated sentence with something only you could write — that's what makes it land.
Opening line: weak vs strong
I am writing to apply for the Marketing Coordinator position at your company.
Your Q1 launch post-mortem is the only one I've seen that admitted what didn't work — that's the team I want to join as your next Marketing Coordinator.
Specific, shows you've done research, hooks the reader.
I would like to be considered for the Customer Success role.
I've spent four years pulling churn out of B2B SaaS — and your free-trial-to-paid funnel looks like exactly the puzzle I want next.
Names the problem you'd own, signals fit.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Repeating your resume verbatim — the letter is for context the resume can't show.
- Using a template opening (everyone sees the same 'I am writing to apply…').
- Going over one page or 400 words.
- Skipping the company name — generic letters get filed under 'no'.
- Closing with 'Thank you for your consideration' and nothing else.
