    The action-impact-metric formula

    Canadian recruiters skim resumes at roughly 6-8 seconds per page on the first pass. In that time, what they're scoring is your bullet points — specifically, whether each one has a verb, a result, and a number. Bullets that have all three get circled. Bullets that don't get skipped.

    • Action: a strong past-tense verb. Built, Led, Cut, Closed, Trained, Shipped, Negotiated, Reduced.
    • Impact: the outcome — what got better because of what you did.
    • Metric: the number that proves it — percentage, dollar amount, time saved, volume handled.

    The formula isn't fancy. It's just what recruiters were trained on. Use it on every bullet and your resume will outperform 80% of what hits the inbox.

    Before vs after: same job, real difference

    Weak: "Responsible for managing the front desk and answering customer questions."

    Strong: "Handled 60+ daily walk-ins at a Service Ontario kiosk, maintaining 4.8/5 customer rating across 11 months and certifying two new hires on the IRIS terminal."

    Same job. The first reads as filler. The second reads as a person who shows up.

    Admin & office support

    What to do if you have no metrics

    Estimate. Honestly, not generously. The metric doesn't have to come from a dashboard — it can come from your own observation. "About 40 customers per shift" is fine. "Roughly 200 emails a week" is fine. "A team of 6" is fine. The point is to give the recruiter a sense of scope.

    When you genuinely cannot quantify, switch to scope words: team size, geography (Atlantic Canada, GTA, Lower Mainland), ticket volume, file count, project length. "Owned the BC and Alberta regional rollout over 9 months" gives more signal than "Helped with the rollout."
