Translating Your Job Title to a Canadian NOC 2021 Code (2026)

How to map foreign job titles — India, Philippines, Nigeria, UK, US, Latin America — to the correct Canadian NOC 2021 code, with a 30-role lookup table.

Canadian recruiters, immigration officers, and provincial nominee programs all speak NOC. If your foreign job title doesn't map cleanly to a NOC 2021 code, your Express Entry points are wrong, your provincial nomination is off, and your resume gets misfiled. This guide shows the mapping method with 30 worked examples.

    Why job-title translation matters

NOC 2021 codes drive three things simultaneously: (1) Express Entry work-experience points (via TEER level); (2) Provincial Nominee Program eligibility (many streams target specific NOCs); (3) Canadian resume readability (recruiters scan for NOC-aligned language).

How NOC 2021 works (in one paragraph)

The National Occupational Classification 2021 replaces the older NOC 2016. Each occupation has a five-digit code where the first digit is the TEER level (0–5), the second is the broad sector, and the remaining three narrow it further. TEER 0 = management, TEER 1 = usually a university degree, TEER 2–3 = college or apprenticeship, TEER 4 = high-school-level, TEER 5 = short-demonstration work. See what is TEER.

    The 3-step translation method

    1. List your actual duties — five sentences, in your own words, describing what you spent time doing.
    2. Search noc.esdc.gc.ca for keywords from those sentences (not from your title).
    3. Read the "main duties" of the top 2–3 candidate NOCs and pick the one where at least 70% of the listed duties match yours.

    Common translation mistakes

    • Choosing by title, not duties. "Manager" in a small Nigerian NGO is often TEER 1 supervisor, not TEER 0 management.
    • Assuming higher TEER is better. Wrong. IRCC checks duties; over-claiming triggers procedural fairness letters.
    • Using NOC 2016 codes on Canadian resumes. NOC 2021 has been in effect since November 2022 — anything older reads dated.
    • Ignoring regulated-profession implications. Claiming NOC 31301 (RN) without CNO registration is misleading; use "Registered Nurse — internationally educated, pending NNAS."
