TEER, in plain English
TEER is how Canada describes the training and experience a job requires. Every Canadian occupation has a 5-digit NOC 2021 code; the second digit is the TEER.
TEER 0 to 5 explained
- TEER 0 — Management. Senior managers, directors, executives. Typically requires years of experience in TEER 1–3 work.
- TEER 1 — University degree. Most professional roles: doctors, engineers, teachers, business analysts.
- TEER 2 — College / supervisory / apprenticeship 2+ years. Registered nurses, computer network technicians, supervisors of trades.
- TEER 3 — College / apprenticeship under 2 years. Medical lab assistants, bakers, machinists.
- TEER 4 — Secondary school + occupation-specific training. Retail salespersons, food and beverage servers, security guards.
- TEER 5 — Short-term work demo. Harvesting labourers, food counter attendants.
How to find your TEER
Find your NOC 2021 code first — see how to find your NOC code. The TEER is the second digit:
2 1 2 3 0 — Software engineers and designers. Second digit = 1, so TEER 1.
6 4 4 0 9 — Other customer and information services representatives. Second digit = 4, so TEER 4.

Why TEER matters for jobs
Job postings on Job Bank, Indeed Canada, and LinkedIn increasingly include the NOC and TEER. Knowing yours helps you:
- Filter postings to roles that match your level.
- Read pay bands on Job Bank — wages are reported by NOC + region.
- Translate international experience into a Canadian-recognizable level (see our newcomer resume guide).
Why TEER matters for immigration
Most federal economic immigration programs (Express Entry: FSWP, CEC, FSTP) use TEER to determine eligibility. TEER 0, 1, 2, and 3 occupations generally qualify. Some category-based draws (healthcare, trades, agriculture, transport) also include specific TEER 4 and 5 occupations. Always confirm the latest IRCC criteria — rules change.
TEER vs the old skill levels
- Old Skill Level 0 → TEER 0
- Old Skill Level A → TEER 1
- Old Skill Level B → split between TEER 2 and TEER 3
- Old Skill Level C → TEER 4
- Old Skill Level D → TEER 5
