How to convert an international resume into Canadian format
- Canadian resumes never include a photo, date of birth, marital status, or full home address.
- Two pages max. Reverse-chronological. Metrics on every senior bullet.
- Canadian English spelling ('organized' → 'organized' is fine, both accepted; 'labour', 'colour').
- Add a one-line work-status statement at the top so recruiters don't guess.
- Translate foreign job titles into NOC 2021 short titles.
The five things to strip out
- Photo, DOB, marital status, nationality, gender. Standard in India, the Philippines, Nigeria, Ukraine and much of Europe — illegal to consider in Canadian hiring and a fast reject signal.
- Full home address. City and province only.
- Objective statement. Replaced by a 2–3 line professional summary.
- References list. "References available upon request" is unnecessary; recruiters will ask if they want them.
- Employment eligibility disclaimers. Replaced by a single work-status line: "Permanent resident since May 2026 — no sponsorship required."
The five things to add
- A work-status one-liner immediately under your name.
- A 2–3 line professional summary targeted at your NOC — see our summary generator.
- Canadian job titles (NOC 2021 short titles) — keep your international title in parentheses.
- Metrics on every senior bullet. Canadian recruiters read for outcomes, not tasks.
- An "Additional" section for Canadian volunteer work, bridging programs, or credential assessments in progress.
Then run it through the ATS checker
Once Canadianized, paste both your resume and a target job description into the free ATS resume checker to make sure the NOC keywords are surfacing at the right density.
How this tool works
- Paste the text of your current resume or CV (any country's format).
- The AI rewrites it in Canadian English: personal details Canadian employers don't expect are dropped, headings are standardised and achievements are kept.
- Foreign titles are rephrased into the closest Canadian equivalents, and a work-status line is added at the top for you to complete.
- The tool is told not to invent employers, degrees or numbers — but always compare the output line by line with your original.
Worked example: a two-page CV from India, Canadianized
Illustrative example — fictional details. Original: photo, "DOB 14/02/1993, Married", a career objective, a "Personal Profile" with father's name, a full Pune street address, and job titles like "Associate Consultant – Band C".
- Removed: photo, date of birth, marital status, father's name, full address (now "Mississauga, ON"), passport number.
- Changed: "Associate Consultant – Band C" → "Software Developer (Java)", with the employer explained once as "multinational IT services company". Internal band names mean nothing to a Canadian recruiter.
- Added: "Permanent resident — authorized to work in Canada for any employer" and "Degree assessed by WES as a Canadian bachelor's equivalent".
- Kept: every real metric and project, rewritten as action + result bullets.
The result fits on two pages. Before sending, she compared it line by line with her original to make sure no date, title or number had changed.
Tips for job seekers in Canada
- Canadian human rights rules discourage employers from asking about age, marital status, religion or family — so don't volunteer them on your resume.
- Your work-status line should be exact: "Permanent resident", "Open work permit valid until May 2028" or "Post-graduation work permit — no sponsorship required". Vague lines make recruiters guess.
- If you have an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), mention the Canadian equivalency. It answers a question recruiters often won't ask.
- References usually go on a separate page provided on request, not on the resume itself.
- Free human help exists: permanent residents can use IRCC-funded settlement services, and many colleges and libraries run resume clinics. Temporary residents should check what their school or local organisations offer.
- In Ontario, since January 1, 2026, publicly advertised job postings (from employers with 25+ employees) can't require Canadian work experience. Lead with what you've done, wherever you did it.

Frequently asked questions
Is this resume canadianizer free?
Yes — free, no signup. Rate-limited per IP. We don't store your resume text.
Will you send my resume to a third party?
The text is sent to an AI provider to generate the rewrite and is not stored on our servers afterwards. Do not paste anything you wouldn't include on a resume.
Can I paste a resume that's already fairly Canadian?
Yes. If little needs to change, the tool will say so — we don't invent problems.
Will the tool invent employers or metrics I don't have?
No. The system prompt explicitly forbids inventing numbers, employers or credentials. If a bullet has no metric in your original, the rewrite won't add one.
Is Canadian English required?
It helps but isn't a dealbreaker. Consistency matters more than variant — pick either Canadian or US English and stick with it throughout.
How long should my Canadian resume be?
One page if you have under 10 years' experience; two pages otherwise. Three-page resumes are common in Europe and India but read as unfocused in Canada.
Should I include my international degree?
Yes, along with the Canadian ECA equivalency once you have it (e.g. 'Bachelor of Engineering, Anna University — ECA equivalent to a Canadian 4-year bachelor's, WES 2024').
Should I write 'newcomer to Canada' on my resume?
You don't need to. A clear work-authorization line and Canadian-format resume do more. If you mention it, pair it with a strength, for example in a cover letter: "recently relocated to Halifax with five years of logistics experience".
How do I list a foreign degree?
Give the degree name, institution, country and year, then add the Canadian equivalency if you have an ECA: "B.Eng., Mechanical — Anna University, India (WES: Canadian bachelor's equivalent)".
