You can write a cover letter with ChatGPT. Everyone does. And every recruiter has read the same "I am writing to express my interest in the [role] position at your esteemed organisation" opening five hundred times this week. A better AI cover letter uses the same underlying model with two additions: a real opening detail, and a hard limit on filler.
What ChatGPT alone gets wrong
- Generic openings. Default template every time.
- Restates your resume. Paragraph 2 usually reads like a bullet-point list of your CV.
- Filler-heavy. "Passionate," "leverage," "results-driven" — the recruiter's tab is already closed.
- Length drift. Ask for a "cover letter" and get 500 words. Recruiters read the first 100.
- No export. Copy-paste into Word and pray the formatting survives.
