Student Resume Canada: A One-Page Template That Works

How Canadian students and recent grads should structure a one-page resume — sections, GPA rules, projects, and a fill-in template.

When to use a student resume

Use this format if you are in college or university in Canada, recently graduated, or applying for co-op, internships, summer jobs, or your first full-time role. Once you have 18+ months of full-time professional experience, switch to a standard Canadian resume format.

    One-page section order

    1. Header: name, city + province, email, phone, LinkedIn.
    2. Summary (optional): 1–2 lines, only if it adds something specific.
    3. Education: degree, institution, expected graduation, relevant coursework, GPA (rules below).
    4. Projects: 2–4 bullets each, describe scope, your role, tools, result.
    5. Experience: part-time, retail, food service — count it all.
    6. Volunteering / Leadership: club roles, student government, volunteering.
    7. Skills: tools, programming languages, certifications, bilingualism.
    8. Awards / Scholarships: only the recent and recognizable.

    Should you include GPA?

    • If your cumulative GPA is 3.5/4.0 (or 80%+), include it.
    • Below that, list major GPA if it's stronger, or skip GPA entirely.
    • Always specify the scale ("3.7/4.0" or "80%/100%"). Canadian universities use different scales and the recruiter shouldn't have to guess.

    Projects, clubs, and volunteering

This is where students win. A capstone project, hackathon, case competition, or executive role at a club is real experience — describe it like work:

    • "Led a team of 4 to build a React + Supabase budgeting app for the UofT Hatchery; placed top 5 of 38 teams."
    • "VP Finance, McGill Investment Society — managed $14k annual budget and trained 3 first-year analysts."
    • "Volunteer tax preparer (CRA CVITP), Calgary Public Library — completed 60 returns over 6 weeks."
