    What a resume summary is

A resume summary is a short paragraph at the top of your resume that tells a Canadian recruiter — in 2 or 3 sentences — who you are, what you do, and the value you bring. It replaces the dated "Objective" line and gives the ATS its first chunk of relevant keywords.

    The 3-line formula

    1. Line 1 — Identity: role + years of experience + industry.
    2. Line 2 — Specialty: the 2–3 things you're known for, in the language of the job posting.
    3. Line 3 — Proof: one quantified result or signature achievement.

    Examples by situation

    Entry-level (recent grad, Canada)

Recent Business Administration graduate from Conestoga College with 8 months of customer service experience. Skilled in Excel, Salesforce, and bilingual (English/French) communication. Increased upsell rate by 12% during a co-op term at a Toronto retailer.

    Mid-career professional

Project Coordinator with 6 years of experience delivering construction and infrastructure projects across Ontario. Strong in scheduling (MS Project), stakeholder reporting, and budget tracking. Closed 14 consecutive projects on or under budget for a $40M portfolio.

    Newcomer to Canada

Registered Accountant with 9 years of experience in audit and financial reporting under IFRS, recently relocated to Calgary. CPA equivalency in progress (CGA-Canada pathway). Led the year-end close for a $120M revenue subsidiary, reducing close time by 4 days.

    Career switcher

Former high-school teacher transitioning into Learning & Development. Built and delivered curriculum for 200+ students; certified in instructional design (ATD). Designed an onboarding program adopted by 3 school divisions in Manitoba.

    Skilled trades

Red Seal Welder with 7 years of experience in structural and pipe welding across Alberta oilfield projects. CWB-certified (FCAW, GMAW, SMAW). Maintained a 99% pass rate on third-party x-ray inspections over 3 years.

    Mistakes to avoid

    • Generic adjectives ("hard-working team player") with no proof.
    • First-person pronouns ("I am a passionate…") — Canadian resumes drop the "I".
    • Listing every skill you've ever touched. Pick the 3 that match the posting.
    • Repeating your job title in every sentence.
