Government of Canada Interview Questions (Federal Public Service, 2026)
Government of Canada federal public service interview questions — competency, values-and-ethics, and second-language questions with a STAR sample.
What to expect
Federal Government of Canada interviews (GC Jobs / PSC process) are structured, competency-based, and scored against a pre-published Statement of Merit Criteria. Expect a written exam, a competency interview (thinking things through, working effectively with others, showing initiative), and a second-language evaluation if the position is bilingual.

STAR-method sample answer
Question: Tell me about a time you thought things through — analysing options before acting.
Situation. In a policy-support role, my manager asked for a same-day recommendation on whether to publish an updated program guideline before a stakeholder consultation.
Task. Balance transparency with the risk of pre-empting the consultation.
Action. I mapped three options (publish, delay, publish with a consultation banner), pulled precedent from two other program areas, wrote a one-pager with pros/cons, and flagged the political sensitivity to the DG's office.
Result. The DG chose option 3, the guideline landed cleanly with a consultation banner, and I was tapped for two follow-up briefing notes on the same file.
