Why Am I Not Getting Interviews?

Five honest reasons your applications are getting ignored in Canada — and a fix for each, from resume targeting to follow-ups.

If you're applying and hearing nothing, it's almost never bad luck. It's usually one of five fixable problems.

    1. Your resume isn't tailored

Recruiters scan for the exact title and keywords from their posting. A generic resume that "covers everything" usually matches nothing. Read how to tailor your resume for a 15-minute method.

    2. Wrong job fit

If you're applying to roles two levels up, or to titles that don't match your experience, the ATS scoring will demote you. Use the NOC code finder to confirm the right title family for your background and search inside it.

    3. Missing Canadian context

Canadian employers want to see your city + province, work-eligibility status (when relevant), and Canadian-style bullets (action + impact + metric). See the Canadian resume format guide.

    4. No tracking, no follow-up

If you can't remember which jobs you applied to, you can't follow up. Follow-ups are one of the highest-yield activities in a job search. Set up a simple tracker and read how to track applications.

    5. Volume is too low or too random

Most successful Canadian job searches send 5–15 strong applications per week, focused on a tight role family. Spraying 100 applications across unrelated roles signals nothing.

    What to do this week

    • Run your resume through the ATS checker.
    • Pick one role family. Find your NOC.
    • Tailor 5 applications. Track every one.
    • Follow up on each after 7–10 business days.
