Interview Prep Tips From Recruiters Who Actually Hire
Twelve interview preparation tips collected from recruiters and hiring managers — what makes a candidate stand out and what gets them screened out.
Interview preparation tips from recruiters fall into four buckets. Get all four right and you'll out-prep most of the field.
Mindset tips
- It's a 2-way conversation. You're also deciding if you want them.
- You don't need to be perfect. You need to be specific, structured and easy to score.
- Treat each round as a project, not a performance.
Content tips
- 6 STAR stories covering leadership, conflict, failure, deadline, impact, ambiguity.
- Lead every result with a metric. "We shipped 3 days early" beats "we delivered successfully".
- Tailor "tell me about yourself" to the JD — where I am → what I've done → why this role.
- Use the AI Interview Prep tool to generate likely questions.
Delivery tips
- 90-second answers. Anything over 2 minutes loses the panel.
- Record yourself. Listen back at 1.5x. Kill "kind of", "basically", "we" when it should be "I".
- Pause before answering. 2 seconds of silence beats 4 seconds of "uhhh".
Closing tips
- 4 questions to ask back, ranked. Don't ask salary in round 1.
- Always end with: "What are the next steps and timeline?"
- Send a 4-line thank-you within 4 hours to each panellist.
