Cover Letter for Newcomers to Canada: A Practical Guide

How to write a Canadian cover letter as a newcomer — addressing relocation, credentials, gaps, and the cultural tone Canadian employers expect.

Why newcomers need a different angle

If you're new to Canada, your resume already has the experience — the cover letter has to bridge the cultural and credential gap. Canadian recruiters look for clarity on three things in your first paragraph: are you allowed to work, how does your past role map to a Canadian one, and can you communicate in plain English (or French in Québec).

    What to lead with

Lead with the role and a result a Canadian employer can recognize — revenue, headcount managed, customers served, or systems used. Skip "I am writing to express my keen interest…" Open with the value you bring.

    How to mention relocation status

    One short sentence is enough:

    • "I recently relocated to Mississauga as a permanent resident."
    • "I hold an open work permit valid until March 2028."
    • "I am a Canadian citizen returning home after 6 years working in the UK."

Do not list the visa category code (PGWP, IEC, etc.) — say "open work permit" or "permanent resident". HR teams understand those.

    Credentials and equivalency

If your degree or licence needs Canadian recognition, name the equivalency body and say where you are in the process: WES, ICAS, NNAS, CPA-Canada, Engineers Canada, etc. Read our NOC guide to map your past role to a Canadian title — recruiters use NOC titles to scan resumes.

    Tone and language

Canadian business writing is direct, polite, and concise. Avoid:

    • Overly formal phrasing ("It would be my utmost honour…").
    • Long lists of personal qualities — Canadian employers want proof, not adjectives.
    • UK or US spellings used inconsistently. Pick Canadian English: organization, colour, centre, licence (noun) / license (verb).
    • Family details, age, marital status, religion, or photo.
