How to Find Your NOC Code
Step-by-step: find the NOC 2021 code that matches your role, why it matters, and how to use it on your resume and in your job search.
What is a NOC code
The National Occupational Classification (NOC) is Canada's official taxonomy of jobs. Every occupation has a 5-digit code and a description of typical duties, requirements, and example titles. Employers, Job Bank, and immigration programs use it.
What is TEER
NOC 2021 organizes jobs by TEER (Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities), from TEER 0 (management) through TEER 5 (short on-the-job training). TEER affects which jobs qualify for which immigration streams and how employers screen.
How to find your code
- List your real job title and 4–6 main duties in plain language.
- Run them through the NOC code finder — it surfaces the closest matches and the standard duties for each.
- Read the duties for the top two matches and pick the one that describes more of your day-to-day.
How to use it on your resume
Don't put the NOC number on the resume. Use the language from the NOC duties — those are exactly the phrases recruiters and ATS look for. Then mirror the specific job posting on top.
